Shopping for pre-loved clothing can be challenging. It is a skill that is not for the faint-hearted as usually, it requires a lot of time, dedication, and perseverance. The joy and excitement when you discover the one unique piece you were looking for is definitely worth the effort! I have been thrifting many years and also combining with purchases from sustainable brands as much as possible. People often ask me, “where do you go to thrift?”. It is not always about the location but about patience and some luck. The next time you go to your thrift or vintage shop, these tips will equip you for the most successful thrift trip yet.

Here are a few ways to make shopping for pre-loved clothes easier.

  1. Always go thrifting well prepared. Have an idea of what you need before you start sifting through the rails.
  2. If you go into a thrift store without a focus, you can easily get lost in the masses of clothing. Create a list of items that would fill the gaps in your wardrobe and, are suited to your lifestyle.
  3. Be ready to try them on. Most thrift stores won’t accept returns so, make sure you really love the item before paying. Make sure you wear a comfortable outfit, leggings and, a tight top would be best because you can try the clothes over your outfit if needed.
  4. Bring some cash with you as credit cards are not always accepted. You can even sell items you want to get rid of to the store before start buying.
  5. Think twice before purchasing. Ask yourself if you will wear the clothes at least 40 times. Fashion comes and goes, which is why it is essential to go for unique items rather than trendy ones. Go for something that will serve you for a more extended period instead of spending money to yet another outfit that you will discard as soon as it is out of fashion. If you are unsure, then leave it for someone else to enjoy.

👉 Don’t forget that the internet has enabled access to some of the best thrifting available. Second hand platforms like depop , vestiairecollective , oxfamgb , rebelle , vinted and E-bay make shopping for pre-loved items much easier. Check out the Ethical Brands Directory for more info on these second hand online websites.

Finally, one of my favourite YouTubers, Verena Erin from the Green Closet has combined her tips in the video below. I hope you find it helpful.

    1. Hi footprintsinthesky, great to hear that you found the thrifting tips helpful. It can be very daunting to go through masses of clothing every time you shop, (I know I always feel intimidated by the endless choices :-)). Thanks for your comment.
